The Golgi is a membrane bound organelle characterized by it’s pancake-stack like structure. These “pancake stacks” are cisternae or membrane sacs. There can be anywhere from 5-60 per Golgi, but there is typically only 5-9. The cisternae are split into 5 sections, the cis-Golgi network, cis-Golgi, medial-Golgi, trans-Golgi, and trans-Golgi network. The cis-Golgi network is the receiving section and the trans-Golgi network is the sending section of the organelle.
It's really cool how the golgi apparatus's structure is separated into various sections. As you guys mentioned in class, of how there is as mystery of what exactly happens between the cis and trans network is something interesting to look up.
ReplyDeleteI believe the structure of the golgi apparatus truly allows for supreme efficiency. Especially since it is rare for a golgi to be located far away from an endoplasmic reticulum, allowing for vesicles to enter the cis network quickly. I think it is amazing that one simple marker on a protein determines exactly where it goes in a cell. This goes to show how important the markers are, because if they malfunction, many complications become apparent in the body.
